Frontier Hotel 1942-2007

"This is the end result of all the bright lights... and the comp trips, of all the champagne... and free hotel suites,
and all the broads and all the booze. It's all been arranged just for us to get your money.
That's the truth about Las Vegas. We're the only winners. The players don't stand a chance. "

Across the street from the Mandalay Bay...

Las Vegas is a city of constrasts.  Sometimes just a street divides the haves and the have nots... the high end and the low end, the rich and the poor...

Mandalay Bay and its other properties (The Hotel, Four Seasons) are at the south end of the LV Strip.  The Mandalay Bay is a beautiful property -- one of the more upscale properties on the LV Strip.

What's interesting is the area around Mandalay Bay has never been developed to the extent that other parts of the Strip have.  It's quite the contrast to be in the luxury of Mandalay Bay and then simply cross the street and see the other "side" of LV!  Enjoy the photos...

Not sure what the daily rate is at the Motel 8...

It would be interesting to see a "pool party" at this place!

The van with the flat tire looks like something out of a Cheech and Chong movie...

Next door to the Motel 8 is the lovely Desert Oasis...

For a Saturday and over 100f it sure is slow at the Desert Oasis pool.  Maybe they need to have some music and drink service?

The "Laughing Jacklope" is now closed.  Shuttered and boarded up.  Covered in tagging...

I don't know the name of this place (Diamond something, I think).   The joint has a large pink elephant in the front of it.

  1. The only poolside music and drinks offered by the Desert Oasis are provided over at Mandalay Bay. I wonder how these motels could compete with the low room prices, free food and free entertainment though. When room rates are high at Mandalay, the nearby downscale places are happy.

  2. I've felt that when times are tough, all casinos should actually raise, not lower, their room rates.
With Mandalay Bay giving cheap rooms, discounts to spas, discounts to buffets, etc. there is absolutely no way those dump-like motels can compete on price. All they offer is proximity to Mandalay Bey. They have nothing else to offer. Nothing. Mandalay might comp your hotel room but these dumpish motels can't afford to comp you for anything even if they wanted to. Its just a cheap room and given the current prices at Mandalay, the motels can't make any money at all. So when the motels become boarded up or barbed-wire type crime places, how will Mandalay Bay feel then?
