Frontier Hotel 1942-2007

"This is the end result of all the bright lights... and the comp trips, of all the champagne... and free hotel suites,
and all the broads and all the booze. It's all been arranged just for us to get your money.
That's the truth about Las Vegas. We're the only winners. The players don't stand a chance. "

The "King" of the Water Sellers

As I have posted before, the water selling -- mostly by bums and vagrants has reached epic proportions all over the Las Vegas Strip.  I have posted on this subject before:

However, the guy in the photos below takes the prize for having the most efficient operation I seen so far.  He uses a "CAMBRO" -- a rolling ice bin designed to deliver ice in hotels for banquets, room service, etc.  He literally had hundreds of bottles of water on ice in that thing, plus reserve.  He was near the south entrance of the Mirage and while I was there, must have sold over 100 bottles of water to tourists walking up and down the Strip.  At one point he about 10 people in line waiting to buy water!  These other water sellers simply cannot compete with this operation.

It turns out based on my observations and conversations that I heard, that this guy is part of a larger water selling operation.  I noted that this water seller had a walkie-talkie and was in constant communication with other people -- I am assuming other water sellers. While I was there some guy came around and asked him if needed anything.  I am speculating that some of these guys have organized into a water selling enterprise.   There must be a network of water sellers like this up and down the Strip -- who then get resupplied by "runners" with water and ice during the course of the day.

Business is good...

Counting all that tax free cash money!

The "King" taking a well deserved break until the next wave hits...

Regardless of the "legality" of this operation, you gotta love this guy's spirit.  I would much rather purchase a bottle of water from him then from some stinking, wild eyed vagrant.

Break Time -- Las Vegas Strip

Break time on the Las Vegas Strip for this crew.  Chilling out with "test tube" margaritas and taking in the scenery.  Later the plan is to hit a "party pit" for 6/5 blackjack, perhaps roll in mass to a club to finish the night.  Life is good.

Gotta love those 6 "test tube" margaritas -- I would suspect that round of drinks set these guys back at least $120.

Las Vegas Smoker of the Week #3

A delicious late afternoon cigarette while strolling down the LV Strip.  Lovely.  I am sure the butt was flicked on the sidewalk later...

"Long Haulers" in Action...

Today I went to play a poker tournament at the Mirage.  So I take the 215 west from Henderson to the 15 north and exit at Spring Mountain.  Nice and easy, door to door in 15 minutes.  While I am on the 215 I drive past the merge from the airport tunnel.  Of course, what do I see -- that's right, two cabbies long hauling unsuspecting tourists to the Strip.   If you would like to learn more about "long hauling" please refer to this previous post on the subject:

These long hauling cabbies are despicable how they prey on unsuspecting tourists and take them on a much longer route to the Strip as opposed to the most direct and shortest route of surface streets out of the airport.  Talk about taking advantage of people.  So here's a couple of photos of these "long haulers" in action.  Note the exits that they are taking.

"Lucky Cab" #2785 merges onto the 15 north from the 215 west after using the airport tunnel:

Note this cab exits at Russell and Frank Sinatra.  Most likely this is a drop off at Mandalay Bay, Luxor or Tropicana.  This is the worst of the long haul abuses as these hotels are literally 3 miles from the airport.

And here's a photo of the actual "longhauler" in all his glory with his "marks" sitting in the back of cab without a clue that they just gotten take for a ride.  The people in this cab probably just got the plane after a 13 hour plane flight from Europe.  Nice.  Welcome to Las Vegas...

And here is Desert Cab #4145 "long hauling" some unsuspecting tourists to Flamingo.  Nice.

Another desert pano

I took this series of photos in Lake Mead NRA coming back from Valley of Fire. The pano gives a perspective of the isolation and vastness of the desert. Click on the pic to see a larger version.  Enjoy.  JH.

Red Rock Pano Photos

Lately I have been trying to group photos together through the use of a tripod.  I then merge the photos in Photoshop to create a pano.  There's quite a bit of trial and error that goes on, plus tweaking of the images -- but I think I am starting to see some nice results.  This is a pano of the "back side" of Red Rock NCA -- The part that that is free to enter.  Click on the image to see a larger view.

This pano was also taken at Red Rock NCA.  Click on the image to see a larger view.

Las Vegas Car of the Week #4

Very clean Coupe de Ville Caddy.  Not sure what year -- but I am going to guess late 70's, early 80's?  This ride is in excellent shape for it's age!  The interior was perfect -- not a rip or tear in sight.   A true classic.

So, you want to move to Vegas?

July 2010 had the hottest average temperature in the history of LV.  Now here's what is interesting -- there were never any days over 111f in Henderson.  Last summer during the same period we had multiple days hitting 112f, 113f, 114f, and this:

115f. 7/28.  That was the hottest temp. I saw in Henderson on my thermometer.  That temp. was at 4:00 pm in the shade  That will kick your ass.  Go mow the lawn during that temp. and see what happens.

So, check out our July/Aug. 2010 electricity bill:

$428.00!  This bill was about $100 more than our bill from last summer during the same time frame -- when temps were hitting 115f!  BTW -- we keep our thermostat around 79f/.  What the hell is going on here?

So, here's how this happened:  This summer was more humid than most summers in LV.  Humidity kept the high temps down, but caused the night temps to stay way above normal.  So because the night temps stayed at over 90f+, the July average temp. record was broken.  Higher night temps means your AC is running more = higher electricity bill than the past summer.  Of course you can  always shut off your AC and sweat in your bed!

I guess the moral to the story is this:  A dry heat is your best friend.  Humidity is not nice, especially in LV!

People of the Las Vegas Strip #2

Just some more photos I have taken of people on the LV Strip.  Of course I must provide commentary as I see fit!

I guess these outfits serve a purpose in the desert heat?  I know Muslims (I am assuming these women are Muslims) are not supposed to drink alcohol or gamble -- but they do come to Las Vegas in droves.  I guess for shows, shopping, dining, etc.?  Interesting.

There are lots of beggars on the LV Strip.  What is interesting is many of these beggars are young and do not look homeless.  Most of them are fairly clean also.  This young lady had the word "FUCK" written in large letters on her jeans -- not visible in the photo.

The next picture was taken a block from the Strip.  Guy on the left is having a conversation with the guy on the right who is passed out.  The guy on the left was yelling and cussing at the guy on the right -- I heard everything he was saying while sitting in my car waiting to turn left at a light.  It was not pretty.

Here is "old Elvis" -- he tends to hang out by the north entrance of the Flamingo.  He really does not look like Elvis -- but he does have a pretty good "Elvis" costume.  I don't know if he works for a casino or is just another street "performer."

I guess the Michael Jordan "gear" is popular again.  Not sure what is going on here from a fashion sense.  Maybe he's some sort of die hard Bulls fan?

This guy just looks very mean.  Most people are happy when they come to LV.  Apparently not this fellow.  Maybe he just got busted out at the Flamingo 6/5 blackjack pit?

Las Vegas Smoker of the Week #2

Break time at work -- a perfect time to go have a delicious cigarette in the car.  I wonder if that butt will end up in the street?  Lovely.  Just another day and another smoker puffing away in Sin City.

Las Vegas Car of the Week #3

I think you need to be at least 60 to drive one of these Caddys.  There's tons of retired folks around Henderson driving these vehicles and also Lincoln Town Cars.  I do like the color scheme and the black cloth/vinyl top.  Very nice.
