Frontier Hotel 1942-2007

"This is the end result of all the bright lights... and the comp trips, of all the champagne... and free hotel suites,
and all the broads and all the booze. It's all been arranged just for us to get your money.
That's the truth about Las Vegas. We're the only winners. The players don't stand a chance. "

Pool Review -- MGM Grand

Pool: MGM Grand -- LV Strip.

Access: Checkpoint at pool entrance.  Key checked to enter the pool.  Possible check of key with room.  We entered the pool area with a guest staying at the MGM.

Rating: 10 out 10. One of the best pools in LV.

I went to the MGM pool in August of 2009 on a Sunday and we only stayed for a few hours.  The sheer size and enormity of this pool area makes it difficult to review with just a short visit.  The MGM pool is certainly one of the largest and nicest pools in all of LV.  It has everything from quiet areas to chill out and relax to a total party scene.

When MGM built the hotel and pool area, it was during the "family friendly" era of LV.  The pool initially was designed to appeal to families and children -- it has a lazy river, splash pools, etc.  This formula has long been abandoned.  The day we went to the MGM pool it was a full blown party.  20 somethings drinking and having a great time.  The lazy river and area around it looked like something out Spring Break in Cancun.  There was a high level of intoxication, partying, skimpy bikinis (yes, I mean thongs), and numerous instances of PDA.  It was virtually impossible to find a person without an alcoholic beverage in their hand.  Floating down the lazy river with one of my children was quite interesting to say the least.  This part of the pool area was so out of control that we decided to move to a "more relaxed" area of the MGM pool complex.

We relocated to another pool area.  This pool was somewhat calmer than the lazy river area -- not quite the party scene we had just left, but still very lively.  There was lots of drinking in and around the pool.  Several couples were engaged in the usual PDA in the pool with an audience of a few hundred, including children.  This pool seemed to attract a slightly older and "calmer" crowd than the lazy river.  A dip in a nearby hot tub ended quickly though when a group of totally shit faced 20 somethings entered the hot tub and were using f-bombs in every other sentence in front the kids.  There was also a tattooed couple in the group, completely drunk, making out in the hot tub.

Here are few things to note about the MGM pool (remember, this is based on a rather short visit):

This pool area has plenty of shade if you need that.  The landscaping of trees/shrubs provides so many areas that allow for shade.  If you want to roast yourself all day that is available, if you want to stay out of the sun that is possible also.  The MGM is built in front of the pool area so as the sun sets, the buildings also provide a shade.

The MGM pool complex is so large that it allows for just about any pool scene a person is into.  It has everything from an out of control party scene to quieter areas to relax and chill out in, plus everything in between.  Families with children can have a good time at the MGM pool, I just think one needs to be selective of the area of the pool you decide to hang out in if you have children.

The music was very loud at the MGM pool.  The mix of music was mostly hip-hop and rap, with club style music mixed in.  Some of the songs had inappropriate lyrics for children, but nothing too over the top.

For me, this is the best pool I have been to since I moved to LV in the summer of 2009.  Based on my brief visit, I found no faults with this pool.  Rated 10 out of 10.
