"This is the end result of all the bright lights... and the comp trips, of all the champagne... and free hotel suites, and all the broads and all the booze. It's all been arranged just for us to get your money. That's the truth about Las Vegas. We're the only winners. The players don't stand a chance. "

The Golden Nugget pool in downtown Las Vegas is a very nice pool. It has a water slide, water fall, a huge fish aquarium right in the pool, a blackjack pit, good drink service, and about half the pool is shaded. It attracts a mix of people from the very young to the older crowd. The music is a nice mix and not too loud. It can be a party pool or a just nice place to hang out and relax. It sort of depends of what you are into. The water slide is great for children. A few things to be aware of though:
The pool deck is very small, compared to most LV pools. It does not take much to get this place packed with people and very hard to even find a lounge chair to sit in. If you like things a bit more spread out and mellow, this pool may not be the best choice. There is a smaller "adults" only upper pool which seems to not get as crowded, but gets completely shaded in the late afternoon.
The pool is completely surrounded by the hotel towers. This can be good or bad. This is good as it can cut down on the wind and also parts of the pool get shaded in the late afternoon when it is the most hot. It is bad because the reflection off of the hotel windows almost act like a second sun blasting you on the pool deck. The heat at this pool from the sun and window reflection can really make this pool deck like an inferno from about 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
There were some issues with PDA the day we went to this pool. One couple, sitting right next to the pool, were making out, with the guy "grinding" his lady friend's thigh area. This was in plain view of hundreds of people and many children. Come on now. There was also a group of three guys in their 20's who were drinking beer out of glass bottles in the pool. In fact, they somehow brought their own cooler of beer into the pool area -- all of which was glass bottles. Security/lifeguards apparently had no problem with this activity.
This pool is rated 7 out of 10. The small, cramped pool area when crowded docks it three points. Otherwise this pool would be a 10.
Update on GN Pool (7-6-2010)
I was over the GN pool yesterday. It was out of control with kids. The pool looked like a waterpark there were so many kids in the pool. Splashing, screaming, out of control behavior, etc. I guess it was "family week" at the GN. Pool deck was packed also with no seats to be had. I have never seen so many children in a casino pool like it was yesterday at the GN. Anyway, if you are looking for a some sort of quiet and relaxing pool, the GN may not be the right place -- at least during the summer travel season.
The Golden Nugget has a nice website that provides a great overview of the pool:
